SHIFTING SCALES

Shifting Scales embodies a subtle recalibration – a shift in balance that this exhibition seeks to explore. It is about shifting perspectives, questioning hierarchies, and challenging the traditional structures that define the art world. It is not merely about adjusting proportions but about rethinking value, about who decides what is seen, recognized, and celebrated. This exhibition embraces an evolving dialogue on gender equality, inviting multiple interpretations of justice and representation. It is about claiming space, amplifying voices, and demanding recognition for the unique perspectives each artist brings. As Nina Vandeweghe so boldly stated, “Let’s eat some f*king cake.” A sentiment that captures both the playfulness and urgency required to break through long-standing barriers. It is a call to action, and a celebration of creative power and a refusal to be confined by outdated traditions.

The title emerged from a dynamic discussion – a reflection of the ongoing need for change. Each proposed name sparked conversations about exclusion, representation, and the act of reclaiming space. Alongside these discussions, a performance concept evolved, embracing ambiguity and inviting dialogue.

Shifting Scales speaks to both the physical space of the exhibition – set in an old justice building – and the shifting dynamics it seeks to highlight. The paradoxes of today remain evident: while the art world is gradually opening to women, it still operates within a rigid, traditional framework of success. The title, proposed by multiple voices, reflects both the softness of an unfolding dialogue and the strength of collective action.

This exhibition does not seek to divide but to recalibrate—to challenge the status quo and elevate those who have long been overlooked. It is about recognition, visibility, and claiming the space that has been denied for too long.

Together, we are not just creating an exhibition; we are shaping a moment, a space where the conversation can evolve, where nuance is embraced, and where the imbalances of the past are confronted with both urgency and conviction. The energy and dedication of each artist involved make this an event that speaks not only to the present but to the future.

So, let’s eat some f*king cake. Let’s continue to shift the scales. The conversation has only just begun.

POSTER DESIGN

At the heart of this work lies the shifting presence and influence of the Woman, her place in the world, her weight in society. A position still in motion, still in need of transformation. But true change asks for more than visibility. It demands an uprooting: from structures, assumptions, prejudices, and long-held habits.

Here, the letters themselves become the Woman – a figure entangled, partially obscured by an overgrowing ivy or rosebush. This vine, like society, like tradition, wraps tightly around her. It is the masculine, the collective norms, the systems that seek to contain. But she remains – strong, upright, resisting. She does not vanish under the weight; she demands space.

The question lingers: who will cut the roots? Who will help her break free, so her voice can ring out with clarity? Her echo is already present – resonating quietly, insistently. Shifting Scales amplifies that sound. It reminds us that her voice deserves to be heard – not just faintly, but fully, without obstruction.

This work is both a call and a vision: a plea for liberation and a celebration of resilience.
