SHIFTING SCALES 2025
Shifting Scales embodies a subtle recalibration - a shift in balance, perspective, and value. Set within a former courthouse, the exhibition reflects on the structures that continue to shape visibility in the art world, questioning who is seen, recognised, and celebrated. Bringing together 46 female artists from Antwerp and beyond, the project centres on autonomy, self-determination, and the act of claiming space. Across installations, sculpture, painting, and performance, the works unfold as a collective yet layered dialogue on gender, representation, and the tension between tradition and change.
The title emerged through conversation: a shared reflection on imbalance, exclusion, and the need to rethink inherited systems. Rather than offering fixed answers, Shifting Scales opens a space where multiple perspectives can coexist, where nuance is embraced, and where established hierarchies are gently but persistently questioned.
The exhibition also resonates with its setting. The history and symbolism of the courthouse echo the themes at play: justice, authority, and the shifting definitions of both. Within this context, the works do not simply occupy the space, they respond to it, reframe it, and momentarily transform it.
Presented during Antwerp Art Weekend 2025 and continuing beyond, Shifting Scales unfolds as both a moment and an ongoing movement. It is a space for encounter and exchange, where artistic freedom takes precedence, where voices are amplified, and where the conversation, still in motion, continues to grow.
Shifting Scales vertrekt vanuit een subtiele verschuiving - een herijking van balans, perspectief en waarde. In een voormalig gerechtsgebouw reflecteert de tentoonstelling op de structuren die zichtbaarheid in de kunstwereld blijven bepalen, en bevraagt ze wie gezien, erkend en gevierd wordt. Met 46 vrouwelijke kunstenaars uit Antwerpen en daarbuiten ligt de focus op autonomie, zelfbeschikking en het innemen van ruimte. Via installaties, sculptuur, schilderkunst en performance ontvouwen de werken zich als een gelaagde, collectieve dialoog rond gender, representatie en de spanning tussen traditie en verandering.
De titel ontstond vanuit gesprek: een gedeelde reflectie op ongelijkheid, uitsluiting en de nood om bestaande systemen te herdenken. In plaats van eenduidige antwoorden te geven, opent Shifting Scales een ruimte waar meerdere perspectieven naast elkaar kunnen bestaan, waar nuance wordt omarmd en waar hiërarchieën zacht maar doordacht in vraag worden gesteld.
De tentoonstelling resoneert ook met haar locatie. De geschiedenis en symboliek van het gerechtsgebouw weerspiegelen de thematiek: rechtvaardigheid, autoriteit en de verschuivende betekenis daarvan. Binnen deze context nemen de werken de ruimte niet enkel in, maar reageren ze erop, herkaderen ze haar en transformeren ze haar tijdelijk.
Gepresenteerd tijdens Antwerp Art Weekend 2025, ontvouwt Shifting Scales zich zowel als een moment als een beweging. Het is een plek voor ontmoeting en uitwisseling, waar artistieke vrijheid centraal staat, stemmen worden versterkt en het gesprek zich verder ontwikkelt.
